Some wonder in this landscape of ethnic prejudice if eliminating Black History Month was a good idea. To me, if the accomplishments of black Americans are remembered as accomplishments for all of the United States, it was.
Some folks may believe that the slave was worth less than his or her white counterpart from the beginning, even prior to our independence. This thought is insane. Slaves added wealth to the communities they worked and the burgining nation to be. Roads, Government buildings, and of course crops for food and clothes were produced and harvested. Therefore to reduce the value of these individuals is something that many even then did not do.
After slavery ended, segregation was still a problem. Even my mom and dad went to segregated schools coming up. The issue was the black schools didn't have the same quality of resources, not even all of the course offerings.
Many believed in order to recognize the plight of good black folks there needed to be awareness of the struggle. However that effort years later was seen as racist itself, because the focus didn't include all the voices. As time ticked into the future and culture, like music and fashion, fused the ethnic divide closer together... lots of people wanted to erase the barrier between countrymen and women.
Without designating history in this nation based on the contributors skin color, we are closer to one family in this nation. The traditions of this country have become the way we all get down! God bless us as one.
